Probably a stupid question but.........

99 F250 SD 4x4. I have Warn manual locking hubs, can I drive the truck with the gutts of the hub pulled out of the wheel bearing & just the cab screwed back on without wrecking anything? Trying to trouble shoot some noises I'm getting in the front end.

If it's a knocking sound as you go over bumps and your steering is a tad off, check your sway bar links. Generally the first suspension piece to go.

This is all from the vague (read: lack of) description of the knocks so I'm taking a wild guess here.

If you're removing just the lock and are leaving the bearing retaining nut in place, then yes you can. I assume it is the old school type hub where you just remove several allen screws and pop the lock off?

Don't do it for any length of time or the end of the axle shaft can wobble around in there and damage the back of the hub ****.

Speaking from experience (though not specifically Ford experience).

Yes it's the old school style lockouts, pull 6 allen head screws, remove the cover, twist out a spring style locking shim & pull a big set of gears out. It's not a long term thing, like I said just trying to trouble shoot. My noise isn't a clunking, it's more of a grinding/vibration. It literally sounds like my tire is hitting the rumble strip along the side of the road when I'm driving. Just happens randomly when I hit a bump or rough spot in the road. Wheel bearing seems solid when I lift the truck up & spin & wiggle on the tire so I'm curious if it's not the lockout itself trying to engage some how while driving.

Try pumping grease into the hub where the speed sensor goes in, I had a noise I couldn't figure out and that's what it was. I don't know how long it'll last but it's been over a month.

UPDATE!!! Figured out my problem. Turns out it was the lockout, I just had to take the gears appart to find it. The large center gear that kind of floats in the middle & gets pushed inside when you lock it in to line up with another gear that rides on the axle shaft, that gear was worn & ground down on the back side. About half the gear was chewed up from it dropping in & grinding on the other one while cruising down the road. At first I was glad to know it's not my bearing untill I started looking at replacement lockouts. OUCH!!!! They sure know what they want for those.
