Heres whats happening and what started it all. 1. u-joint out on drivers front, so removed auto hub, rotor, spindle, and old u-joint. 2. Installed u-joint (was somewhat snug on needle bearings but worked it around before installing), installed spindle, hub with bearings repacked, spindle nut (its 6 sided not the kind with the 4 point nut, lock ring and 2nd lock nut), I must now have put the lock flat wire in correctly as I didnt know where it originally came from, installed auto hub. This worked fine for a week and then the wheel bearings went out from the hub nut coming loose. (New nut and lock was not obtainable from Ford warehouse.) So onto plan B. NEW WARN LOCK OUTS. New nut assembly for lockouts. Hew hub, bearings and seals. Packed bearings with red wheel bearing grease. Beleived we properly installed new lockouts. Was in freinds repair shop. Hes done lots of these. Worked fine in 4x4 and when unlocked hubs. Makes noise I can here in cab when not in 4x4 in cab but hubs locked. Vehichle is 1996 F150 351, auto trans, was auto hubs, manual transfer case if that helps. I dont know what transfer cse it is. Some help would be nice as we dont have a local ford dealer anymore.
Replaced u joint again. Still makes noise going down pavement. (Its really irratating) Does not make growling noise when hubs are not locked in. Its only the left front that does this. Also hear a clunk, ocassionally, when backing up with the wheels turned some, not full lock. I just wish I hadnt screwed up my automatic hubs!
From what you said it does not sound like a wheel bearing. You really need someone to listen while you spin it ,and when axle is spinning see if the u-joint or something else including the transfer case is making noise. Unless you get someone here that has had the exact same issue, that's what I would do. Hope this helps or that you get more advice.
Sounds like you need to replace the spindle bearings. They support the axleshafts inside the spindles. I've had one fail on me before, and it matches your symptoms exactly.
Just a thought here but have you checked to see that both hubs are locking in/out? I know that the front end will make weird noises if one hub is locked and the other one is not.
?Spindle bearing? I have replaced the wheel bearings in the outside of the spindle when replaced everything else. Are these inside the spindle tube? Dont ever remember seeing any in the 3 other pickups Ive done in the past. I could be 180 degrees off when I put new u-joint in. Didnt make them the 2nd time and couldnt see original marks. 4wd works wonderful, its quite muddy here in IOWA when its not froze.
Iowa Froze?? I believe ya. My son lives in Council Bluffs . You guys can keep that -10 -15 -Oh my God stuff, out there please. Let us know how you make out. It helps everyone .
I have a photographic memory. But as I get older I don't have as much film

Yes, they are inside the spindle tube. You remove the spindle from the knuckle, tap the old ones out (or what remains of them), and tap the new ones in. Grab the shaft at the u-joint and try to wiggle it. You'll be able to feel play in the shaft going through the spindle if the bearings are shot.
NSTUEVE, HMM. Am I a Hawkeyes fan. HMM. Im a HMM. Lets see if I get this right. If its Hawks vs Clones I flip flop. If its UNI vs either ISU or IOWA and I didnt listen to the game and UNI wins Im a UNI fan. Do I ever root against any of those 3, NOPE! I am not a Nebraska fan, but have enjoyed them beating teams from California, ND, Florida, etc.
Back onto the question I asked. Ill have to take time and tear it apart again. Must be the needle bearing thats missing in the spindle. Im sure when I cleaned it the 3 times its been apart, there wasnt one there. Thanks guys. Randal in snowy COLD IOWA
