One other question, our temp gauge used to read in the normal range, we had the water pump replaced a month or so ago now the temp stays at the N, is this normal or should I get the gauge checked?
Its normal for many of the older 4.0 engines to run on cool side. Since the pump was replaced you may just be experiencing improved coolant circulation and thus lower temperatures.
The other thought is the current thermostat may be the wrong temperature range. If it was replaced (common problem) it may not be the correct one.
As long as it stays around "N" (the beginning of the normal range)it is fine to use during the summer. During winter though, the engine may never warm up sufficiently to keep it from running constantly rich. If your mileage drops off by 10-15% during winter, an incorrect thermostat may be the problem.
Mine does the same thing since I replace the Radiator, Heater Core and Water Pump. I also replaced the Fan Clutch and I think that also made a difference.
I still wonder about heat in the Winter, but in Florida tht's a small worry.
The Thermostat was the one recommended by NAPA for this model 4.0L Aerostar.
