The index plate (i doubt it's the official name, just a descriptive term) I am referring to is the vertically long plate at the end of the steering column. The 7209 shift tube slides into it, and the 3511 flange bolts over it. Sorry if I created any confusion.
Upper pic: On cars & trucks with a separate shift lever, the detent, shown as 7A115 .. is inside the transmission.
Lower pic: On newer cars/trucks where the shift tube goes down inside the steering column, the detent, shown as 7A216 (looks completely different), bolts to the bottom of the upper flange.
A tab on the shift lever fits up against the detent.
