Timing light on 351

How do you get the timing light in an '84 351? The point is right behind the alternator

Could you remove the alternator, set the timing, and then put the alternator back on?

There should be a way to make that blinkenlight hit the required area with that pointer but, yeah, it's really difficult.

It can be kind of screwy to find but on my 351 I shine the timing light almost straight down from above the water pump. Standing in front of the passenger side headlight I hold the light to the drivers side of the alternator shining it SLIGHTLY back towards the passenger side. But like I said it can be pretty screw to get the light to shine in exactly the right place. This is just the method I have found that works for me, hopefully it'll work for you.
