been really busy. getting this motor ready to install. I haven't done a "build thread" there are plenty of those out there.
My thanks to Clay and Co. Riffraff is always on top. Swamps for all their good stuff.
My machinist spent extra, EXTRA time getting this thing right. the balance alone should make a HUGE difference.
Swamps performance rebuild kit, Coated and skirted pistons, went through all the injectors, Gearheads stage one cam, Forged rods, ALL new rod bolts, head and main studs, new stage one turbo from KC turbo. (this thing is huge!). Moroso oil pan. etc
I did had local Ultimate lining co coat a new set of valve covers. I've heard that the bed coating will cut the injector clicking by about half. we'll see.
any way should be running tomorrow.
its actually gray, the lighting makes the pics kinda blue.
its in! spent most of yesterday fighting with the turbo and baby's butt. could not get them to mate up. Finally got pissed and pulled all of it out. Found out the hole in the mating surface of the turbo housing was about a 1/16 off to match up with the babys butt. 10 min with a dremel took care of that little 4hr fight. sheesh.
Any way it runs, sounds great. haven't got out on the road with it. Few little leaks to address. this week or this weekend, I'll put some time on it.
The valve covers were coated by Ultimate coatings. Its very similar to Line X. It goes on hot(215 degrees) and cures hard. Rhino liner won't work because it won't take the heat. anyway it seems quieter, even with the single shots.
Ricky.. I'd love to get back down to you. Looking for some good crawfish!!!
Stewart, I got 235,500 miles out of it. three blown 38R's and i was looking for a reason to go through it. After the last turbo I couldn't get rid of the smoke. up on tear down I found 8 cracked pistons and a worn out block.
I put my first 38r on at about 100K. seemed fine. when the new 2nd gen wheel came out, I thought I'd try one. lasted all of 1100 miles when the it self destrucked. no warning just boom!. Replaced it with another modded 38r and it lasted about 5k of just running around, but as soon as I hooked the trailer to it, 1000 miles into the trip BOOM, same self destruction. put a stock 38r on the last time but could never clear up the smoke. that's when I torn it down.
I spoke with a couple of tuners around the country and they are seeing the same thing. If you actually use your truck, the 38r/2nd gen wheel are not working. The manufacturer is denying it but I wouldn't recommend one to any one.
I picked my new turbo from KC turbo out of Mesa. its a journal bearing replacement for a stock setup. I like to stay with the stock mounts because I'm all over the country and don't want to be stuck on the side of the road waiting for a turbo to be shipped from whereever.
