fuel filter drain

this is probably common knowledge but i just changed fuel filters a couple hundred miles ago. i had quickly referenced the owners manual and it showed a drain valve however mine did not have one. ok so i guess this will be messy. just unscrewed the filter put a new one in. drove about 100 miles and then got fuel. 50 miles later (last night) water in fuel light comes on.

was almost home so i just drove home, knowing everything would be closed today i figured id just pull the fuel filter and re-install to drain the water. put new fuel filters in tomorrow. went over the the shop this morning pulled the fuel filter out only had a few droplets of water that came out.

seemed weird to me that so little water was in the catch pan but yet i had a water in fuel light. so i started looking closer. cleaned the crud off the area the owners manual said there should be a drain valve. found a alen plug. pulled it and got more the amount of water i would have expected as well as some brown slimy sludge. my guess would be this plug has not been removed and properly drained in a long time.

so for anyone who thinks you don't have a drain valve on your fuel filter....

btw it was a 6mm put one in my glove box in case of a roadside problem.

That sensor to the right gets caked with sludge. It can be hard to clean out even with the cover off... So if the WIF light doesn't go off and stay off, buy a new o-ring gasket and remove the cover. You will get some narley crap out of there...

Your lucky you got yours out, unless I am one of the few that was not able to. I ended up taking the whole side cover off, tried an easy out.........tried a chisel, that SOB was not moving. I just got a new cover from AutoNation, came with a new plug which I promptly stuck in the "6.0 spare parts" drawer of the tool box and stuck the improved version in that I already had.
The new covers don't have the hole for the heater.......must have been a deal where they figured it was not worth it?
