squeak in steering wheel

I've noticed lately when I turn the steering wheel slowly I get a slight creaking sound from somewhere behind the wheel. Any ideas what is causing it and if it's worth tearing it apart to fix it. I only notice the noise when the radio is off and turning the wheel while sitting still.

Is there a U - joint or knuckle type arrangement in the steering shaft somewhere under the dash? If so, may need to be lubed.

I had mine replaced under warranty. Sometimes nothing happens. The noise was irritating to me. Certain functions on you steering wheel could be affected.

Hi fordman19762003,

It sounds like you might try fixing this yourself, but let me know if you decide to have your dealer diagnose the creaking sound. How many miles are on your truck?

I'm going to take it to the dealer since it's still under warranty until the end of January. I just need to get a free day to do it.

Great next step, fordman19762003; come back and tell us what you find out at the dealership. How many miles are on your rig?
