Looking for a gear box for a 79 f150. I've called lmc and bronco graveyard and both said its not in stock and no estimate time when it will be back in. Any other resources? Anyone have a good one that they wouldn't mind parting with? Would mine be rebuildable? There is some play somewhere in the box. Input shaft turns quite a bit before the output starts to move.
I saw them but wasn't too sure. Any experience with them ?
Got mine around June! Truck drives amazing! No more turn to turn steering to keep the truck straight! I would say best improvement I made to the truck so far
Redhead adds a bearing to the lower end of the steering box casting that the factory did not install. This adds much more support/stability to the sector shaft and should make the gearbox last much longer.
On the other side of this, I installed a Saginaw PS gear box on my '69 F100 last year. I bought it through O'Reilly Auto Parts (p/n 27-7504) --although, I had to buy it online and have it delivered to my house. I could not buy it DIRECTLY through my local O'Reilly store (What the....???). Anyhow, it's been a year now and I have had zero trouble out of it.
Parts store PS gearboxes won't come with the pitman arm. I do not know if the Redhead box will come with it either (?). It is different from the pitman arm on the manual steering gear box and you will have to have it to swap over to power steering.
Got my RedHead Steering box in Dec 2012 after putting it off for a few years .... the gift that keeps giving ..... pleasure everytime I drive the old girl. It's a '77 F150 4x4 with PS but since 1986 she has had the '78-9 style steering linkage from tie rod ends all the way to pittman arm. The steering box is the same as a one on a '79 F150 4x4 w/PS ....
I live in Va. RedHead is in Seattle, Washington. I called and ordered on a Monday morning. Mailman drove into driveway with it in it's large "if it fits it ships" USPS box Wednesday afternoon. You will reuse your pittman arm.

--Ahh, my goof. I thought Brian was talking about going from manual to power steering but, I understand now he was just talking about changing an existing power steering gear box out. Yeah, in that case, the pitman arm would just be swapped over onto the replacement PS gear box.
If it had been the other way around (manual to Saginaw PS box), the Saginaw pitman arm would be required. I went through this on my truck, when switching from manual to PS.
Sorry for the late reply. I went ahead and ordered from Redhead. It was a bit more pricey but from what yall have said, it's probably well worth it. Sorry for the confusion. I'm just swapping out my existing p/s gear box. I can't wait.
