I have a 79 F-150 4X4 and the gear box is leaking bad. I have another gear box that was on the truck I totalled. It was practically brand new. When I totalled the truck the impact cause the steering shaft to twist and crack. I was wondering how hard it would be to switch out the shaft that's in the gear box in the truck to the newer one? Does anyone have any schematics of the gear box and parts inside that they could email me??
You really need to get the OEM manuals on CDROM from the
[link: motorhaven.autoanything.com|Online Store] here. They have that info and much more that is vital to maintaining your truck.
The shafts can be changed provided your replacement is not too worn. You will need some fresh seals tho. If you have to buy seals why not reseal your existing box?
Insurance companies won't replace steering boxes unless you scream loud enough, they just have the bodyshop reposition the wheel which messes up the steering box and causes wander. Unfortunately it is very common for the sector shaft to twist in any frontal fender bender.
Thanks Torgue1st, Well I was thinking that since that box was new that if I could possibly just changes the shaft it would be a little easier. I will get the manuals for sure and work on it.
I agree about the insurance co. I hit the girl in the rear. Not my fault she pulled out in front of me. The truck was drivable so I drove it home after work and to work the next day 45 miles both ways. The next day when I drove it to work I dropped it off to have the realigned. After a few hours the shop called and said I needed to come look at my truck and that I didn't need to be driving it. So I did and found the busted shaft. When the insurance co. looked at it I got a little ill about the whole wreck and told him I wanted everything that was bent replaced and that I had been working on the truck to restore it. He said he understood and there wouldn't be any problems. I got a check a few days later with all the parts needed to fix my truck........
