Improve reverse lights?

My backup lights are not very bright. Anyone improve them without spending $$ or doing an entire LED upgrade?

Thanks!

Not sure what you had in mind without spending money.

All I can think of is check voltage at the bulb. If low voltage fix the issue but even that is likely to cost some money.

Backup lights like all of your exterior lighting is regulated by law. If I recall back up lights are limited to 260 lumens or somewhere in that area. LED backup lights are not an upgrade to actual light output, they are an upgrade to longevity and cost significantly more money.

Sorry - I did not mean not spending money - just not mega dollars.

I will check the voltage at the bulb.

You could add some flushmount LED bars to the bumper w/o spending a ton. I was thinking of some like this one for myself (all over ebay, etc). Something like this is a 60deg flood, 800 lumens per 1 fixture. Adding 1 per side on the bumper would gain you +1600 lumens. Or more work but nicer look would be something flushmount.

Lumen limits? Never heard of anyone getting a ticket for backup lamps...? But stranger things have happened I suppose.

I've used these personally in my Expedition. They made a huge difference. The reason is because these have a direct rear facing led under a lens in addition to surrounding led's that get reflected back. Because of the lens, they are a bit longer than the regular bulb. They fit fine in my Expedition and I know people that have them in their F250's. I'm going to order another set for my Excursion now. Wow the price has really come down also. Two years ago I paid $25 or $30 for a pair. Now they are $7!

Yes. The best resource I know for cross referencing and finding bulb types is the Sylvania website:

Bulbs

As you can see, the bulb needed is a 3156 which is the same type as the Amazon linked LED bulb. The "only" problem is that this bulb is a tiny bit longer than a standard 3156. So it may not fit behind all lenses. The base is correct.

I have a set of CREE LED reverse lights I installed on the Ex and my F250. I got 'em from Retro-Solutions but they can be had anywhere.

They are TONS brighter than OEM and work so much better for my lifted F250 than the OEM's did.

These are the ones I have in mine. They work very well and are a huge improvement.

Auto Dynasty 3156 16-SMD Cree White LED Light Bulbs

I got them from Amazon but they are no longer available from there.

My LEDs look like the Cree but different brand (you see the yellow in the lense) They help but nothing is better than dedicated reverse spots.

I went with these. Installed in under an hour. 2400 lumens total.

Ironton LED Worklights — 2-Pk., 18 Watt, 1,200 Lumens, 9–32 Volt | LED Automotive Work Lights| Northern Tool + Equipment

There are no limits on lumens for backup lamps in Texas. I don't know about other states, but I have never heard of this "limit on lumens" in 17 years of writing tickets
