After replacing both heads with remanufactured heads from ford along with new egr and oil cooler a month ago, she still overheats when pulling a load. While normal driving and not towing, no problems. In the last 5,000 miles since work was done and while towing approx. 15,000 lbs (load and trailer weight) she got hot once, slowed down, temp retreated got home - she has not overheated since then pulling 4-5 loads over the next 2,500 miles. Today at about 75 degrees only 4 blocks after picking up a load at about 12,000 lbs she started getting hot again. After I let her cool down and got on the Freeway the temp went down, appears she's not staying cool in the city with a load on. With all the work and new parts I had installed, does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem might be?
Water pump, EGR disconnected, thermostat, fan control malfunction(ussually the wiring) are all things to look into. What codes do you have? What is your ECT, and EOT when pulling these loads, what's your standing 60 mph on flat ground delta and exact ECT and EOT?
Sorry about that, 2007 6.0 with 80k miles. Thanks for the list moefer, I'll get on checking those items out. I don't have a device yet to check on temps, it's on the list just haven't pulled the trigger yet.
It's gonna be hard to figure out without a DashBoss or scangauge. Need temps in actual degrees cause the dash is dummy gauges. Will also need to be able to read FanVAR to tell rpm of the actual fan. It's really the only way to know without actually just swapping out parts. Like mentioned earlier, water pump is a big culprit here as the impeller can separate and this will mean poor water flow under load.
Everything works well (AC, heat) both while towing and not towing and dash gauge never goes above mid point. Through the trailer and a load on and the temp spikes over the midpoint after only driving a short distance and only in 70-80 degree ambient temp. Today it got hot while I town, 2 weeks ago got hot while freeway climbing a hill with a load, understandable but it should have been okay. In between these two instances I've made 4-5 trips towing with no problems, gauge midpoint the whole way.
your truck EOT is actually hot much before the dash gauge tells you. Recommend getting a set of gauges and quit toying with the idea. You don't want anything melting into your hot oil
