Joying Double Din head unit

The other thread was quite long and the title didn't make any reference to the actual unit, so I started this thread.

I purchased this unit, JOYING Android 4.4.4 Car Stereo Universal Quad Core Hd 1024*600 Resolution - Model #JY-UQ124 from Amazon.

As I mentioned in the other thread, the unit is mighty cool!

I ordered the Metra 65-5817 mounting kit and heavily modified it.

You need to create a vertical opening of at least 4"...4 1/16" would be better. The width is fine though.

Take the Metra side plates and remove the radius portion, then notch them for where the Joying unit faceplate attaches to the chassis.....look and study how it works...it will snap in, so you need to retain a stop to push the assembly in to the dash.

I also made an adapter to use the rear sliding mount. After I spent about 5 hours cutting the dash and making/modifying parts....I put it and and jammed it home. It may never come out.

When you remove the factory radio, there are two screws holding the dash cover on...you need to remove those to be able to dremel the opening....don't re-install those screws!!!! Once you snap the radio back in the dash...you will never be able to remove the screws...as you can't remove the radio.

I did order the antenna amplifier for it as well, and installed it. I will say, and maybe it's something I did, or the antenna amplifier....but I get no AM reception.....none.

Although I didn't take any picture while inprocess, I could show the final result.....if I knew how to post a picture here.

Did you have to do any trimming on the dash itself or was it just for the mounting kit?

The only thing that concerns me is that as things get more advanced and the Joying slowly ages, I would like to install a new head unit. Will this be possible or are you going to have to replace the dash from all the trimming? Still very interested in this head unit.

Here is a how to, to post pics.

You have to really take your time and plan your work. I trimmed the dash (I think the factory radio would be fine going back in) and work over the mounting kit.

What app is that? I could use that.

Here's mine installed. I actually couldn't get the system to fit right with the mounting kit for some very stupid reasons (missing screws, doesn't hold in place, breaks) so mine is pressure held by the dash trim itself. I don't know how that all happened but it works, it's smooth, and it doesn't move at all (helps that the joying-harness unit is relatively light.)

Sorry in advance if this is a zombie post but I am also trying to install the same unit, and about to go out and get the same Metra kit, do you have any pics of how you did the cutting as far as the Metra kit is concerned, or any pics at all that would help me out? Thanks!! I am pretty cool running the GPS antenna and the USB wires and all that mess so I am not too scared there, I do want to find some sort of USB pass through that will mount into the dash like a gauge but have a USB port or two that I can plug things into if I want

@Scott: is that a Joying unit also in your picture? what did you do to make it fit good?

@Noober0x: what install kit did you use for your unit?

Jaime it is the Joying and as you know the unit is big. I mounted mine to the dash itself the part you take off that goes around speedo, steering column ect. I made some braces that went from radio to screws that hold in ac vent selectors. I did have the metra kit but only used the left side of it as you can see in the pic because there just isn't enough room to use both without more dash cutting. So when and if I pull the dash the radio comes out at the same time. This eliminates the radio appearing crooked.
