Injector Life?

Hello,

I obviously own a 6.0 but I have a question.

Background ( Owned the truck since it had 5 miles on it)
She if anything is over serviced and when I change/use oil I use Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme.

Last week she started to have a RPM bounce during idle only. It would remind you more like a moment of no ignition then just the normal miss if that makes sense. Performance was fine no more or less smoke then usual or color change. Then Monday hit and she had a terrible vibration. It got worse, smoked more then normal, and became a slug. I limped her to the dealer and they informed my I dropped injector #8. I got to see it on the computer they use for myself .

So my question is what is normal or an acceptable life span for this part? My truck has 117,000 miles on it and she is a road queen. The dealer commented on I got good life out of these. I was shocked/slightly appalled. Good life?????Really??????? In my eyes this is horse #### but maybe I am mistaken.

I like both Chevy and Ford but right now I am slightly pissed. Chevy stepped to the plate and gave the 200K warranty for their issues. If Fords product is that bad I feel they should do the same. I have own 20+ cars some with 229K+ miles on the same injectors.

What are you guys finding and sorry for the story?

what kind of injector failure? Electrical or mechanical? How often do you change your oil? How often do you change fuel filters? Do you use ford filters? Multiple things can cause failure in a heui system.

Fuel filters are changed at typically 12 even though the dealer says 15. All filters are OEM in fact the dealer does all my services with the exception of changing air filter, transfer case, and oil change. I change the oil at 5k no matter what. Everything is pretty much by the books I'm overly **** on this truck given its track record.

You should get over 200k miles out of injectors IMO.

Bet it does not have a Blue spring update in the pressure regulator.
I lost #7 & #8 on mine the PO had not done the update and I puked
the injectors about 170K.

What is your fuel pressure?

My guess would be low fuel pressure, I would have the dealer check the fuel pressure under wide open throttle condition, it needs to be greater than 45 PSI. And I agree with Sean that it likely needs the blue spring upgrade for the fuel pressure regulator.

I will ask them about the fuel pressure, my edge won't give me that reading and I am pretty sure that upgrade has not been done. I don't recall anything along those lines. I am going to ask to talk to the Ford rep but I'm not holding my breathe. Worth a shot!

HEUI injectors have both a fuel and a high pressure oil side. So, fuel quality, additive use, and proper filtration are a factor. The other side is high pressure oil, and quality and filtration of oil, regular changes are also a factor.

My bet is on fuel pressure. The rear injectors 7 and 8 will see the lowest pressure because they are at the very rear of the head furthest from the regulator.

Did the IDS show you a trace that looked like this one in the Youtube?

Look at about 2:03 into the video for the uncompensated view.

I't not that hard to do the driver side. It's the passenger side that
is a pain to get at. But by removing the plastic over the evaporator
fan housing it becomes easy. There are some push fasteners and some
clips on the bottom of the housing that are a bit stubborn.

If you do it yourself get Ford injectors and save the headaches.

I might end up doing it next go around. Question... doing some research and Powerstrokehelp I think it was mentioned fuel filter changes, oil changes, and quality of the fuel being a epidemic here recently for the failures in the 6.0ls. Did Ford really stop using the WIF sensor as he noted in 2005?

At this point I am debating either I should do the entire left side or 1 injector. I know I need the blue spring update, and a FF change to. What do you guys think?
