Today I was at my local junkyard I ran across an explorer with an independent rear suspension 8.8 rear axle . I was wondering if the carrier would fit out of the IRS into a solid axle 8.8 in my 86 F150
Thanks!

I don't have an answer to your question but your post has got me thinking. Swap explorer or equivalent independent rear with the solid axle... probably has disc brakes too. Hmm..
I believe that an 8.8 ford is an 8.8 ford regardless of the suspension. I could be wrong though, hopefully someone can further answer.
I was wondering because of my hi mileage 3.08 trac loc could use to be rebuilt after checking on prices for new setup 😵 the thought passed me if I found a low mileage trac loc set up it would be considerably cheeper the one thing I've seen that made me question was the explorer carrier has a speed sensor / ABS wheel behind the ring gear thanks for the reply !

i had a 97 lincoin mark viii and I also wanted to swap my 8.8 center , I found a 8.8 center out of a sold axel explore after tearing my center out I found out that the irs center is different then the regular one . Im pretty sure that the irs and the normal centers do not interchange . Maybe try to find a f150 or explore with less miles then yours and check the door tag for what gear and if it has a limited slip.
You don't necessarily need the carrier though, do you? The pinion/ring gears should be the same, I would double check the spline. If spline is the same and both 8.8 I don't see why there would be a problem. Unless of course you were wanting to actually swap the carrier.

???? He's looking to replace his worn out limited slip, so yes he needs the carrier. But ring and pinion gears don't have splines, those are in the carrier, so I'm not sure what your thought is here.

From what I get in this link is that it will all go together, but the side gears may not have the grooves for the axle retaining clips. So you would have to swap side spider gears.
Ok how can I tell what size cross pin I have in my 86 F150 ? It's an H8 3.08 trac loc 8.8 also without popping the cover off how many spline are the axles ? I had done some forum hopping and heard 86+ is the 7/8 pin with the 31
Thanks for the help !
