I got my batteries, starter and alternator checked today. Batteries and starter are good and alternator failed volt regulation (?). I replaced it and still same thing.. I have a mechanical volt gauge and at idle it is barely putting out 12-13 volts. To my understanding this should be about 14 (?). I did notice the alternator belt flaps around but I have read that it's actually normal. Is there a bad wiring somewhere? Or am I just looking at getting a warranty?
Voltage regulator is square boxy thing on the flat metal pan behind the passenger battery. Has 4(?) wires coming out of it.
If all you want is a regulator, upgrade to one that pumps out like 14.2v. Stock is pathetic.
I wish I could link it but another member years ago suggested that, cause he'd done it. He loved it.
I went with the 3g alternator upgrade, which moves the regulator inside(or at least on-board) with the alternator. That alt pumps out over twice the amps of the Stock unit, with light wiring involved.
There are a few good write-ups already out there, just search for them.

I got a new regulator. Is this as easy as unplug and bolt the old and and bolt and plug the new one?
The voltage regulator is external, on the fenderwell or radiator support. That is probably bad.
when going to replace my volt. regulator i found a wire was just hanging off of the harness. i found a diagram but am unsure what or how this wire is supposed to be connected.
that is the diagram.
those are the pics of the wire on my truck. it looks to be a yellow wire.
the voltage regulator fixed it for me. as you can see you could say i needed a new one, lol.
as expected my harness was toast..completely rusted so i just extending the wires a bit with butt connectors and used female end of a spade connector to connect to the spades on the voltage regulator. if you are going to do this be sure that you do one wire at a time to prevent putting the wrong wire in the wrong spot.
as always these forums have helped me fix my problem.
