I put a new wire harness in and hooked it up acording to the diagram I was given with the harness. I'm not charging and the alternator light is
on. My volt meter shows 12 and when I turn on other accessories, lights and wipers the volt meter drops to 11. Whats the volts meter supposed to be at and am I missing something on the alternator? New alternator, new voltage regulator and new battery.
13.7 I belive is what a motorcraft alternator puts out.
YOu sould double check all your wires especialy at the regulator. Also did you polaraize the regulator? The instructions sould be on a sticker on the regulator.
The charging system should put out around 14 volts (Mine is 14.2, but anywhere between 13.5 and 14.5 is good). The regulator has four wires going into it. Two of them (S and F) match to two terminals on the back of the alternator, Stator and Field. Terminal I goes to your charge light (which from the sounds of it is OK), and A is reference which goes to a hot connection, like the battery side of the starter solenoid. The regulator must have a good ground to work properly, so make sure the bolts and area it's secured to are clean. If your truck has an old ammeter in it, that could be a problem also.
