429TJ + ignitor by pertronix + accel super coil
help me insure iv got this wired up will ya guys?
so iv got a 429 thunderjet in a '68 t-bird with oem distributor but with the ignitor by pertronix kit installed.
it appears as if this needs 12vlts.so i ran a line off the fender solenoid pin that supplies 12v when the key is run/on.

i had a accel super coil so i installed that (what a difference in how the old gal starts and runs!)
but i guess im supposed to run a ballast resistor with it? even though it's no longer a points dizzy?
http://www.jegs.com/InstallationInst...110-140001.pdf
so right now,iv got a ground wire on the coil along with the ground wire from the pertronix.
and for 12v i have a line directly from the switched power fender solenoid, the line from the ignition switch (which probably has a resistor in it's line? -'68 t-bird) and the positive line from the pertronix on the power side of the coil.
am i correct that instead i should have;
leave negative lines alone.
my 12v switch solenoid power hooked directly to the + wire of the pertronix bypassing the coil altogether.
from the oem ignition switch (with it's oem resistor?) connected to a accel ballast resistor 150001 ( which apparently is .085 ohm ballast resistor )
correct?
the reason i ask,is because i called accel today to ask them if i should be using the ballast resistor with the super coil and he said that depends on what the manufacture of the points to electronic kit called for (i had to go look to see what it was latter on.)
well if he's right, and it calls for a straight 12v,then how i have it now would be correct.when reading the super coils instructions it appears that needs the ballast resistor.perhaps i guess what he meant was, that if the dizzy kit needed some more resistance then i would add the 0.85 to what it also needed.i guess now that i think it out, this is what he meant.
so sounds like im on the right track by making the changes from now to how i describe second will be the ticket to success?
most people reading this are probably thinking, holy ........ dude, just ditch that old school crap and drop in a modern HEI dizzy and be done with it already.LOL but the dizzy has already been converted from points,i had the super coil and i like old school appearance.

im going with option 2 like im gathering from the instructions.more researching other sites (via googling) does show in fact/recommended by other old school hot rodders, that the coil will last longer with the resistor.
so full 12v to pertronix then the .85 resistor in front of super coil.
on a side note,i see where people claim slower cold starts with the resistor as a side effect for longer coil life.
that made me think that if i noticed a big enough difference,i could hide a relay that i would wire up to have one pin just momentarily trigger 12v after the resistor, hooked up to where i feed the direct pertronix only when cranking, then off when in run position, this way the only thing powering the coil would be the ignition switch line through the resistor as normal after the engine starts.anyway, just a random thought that may or not help an eventual reader here in the future.sort of like have your cake and eat it too.full 12v when cranking, then resistor protection for long coil life when running.
anywho.i'll show ya my 429 project soon.everyone likes to see an old school engine.

oh.i looked around but no dice on finding the original resistor from.......i dunno over 20 years ago lmao! no surprise there.well anyway im counting on a reviewer here for a much more reasonably priced resistor than the accel 150001.
no specs on the resistance anywhere but a reviewer states .85
i tell ya i dunno what type of condition the coil on there was in (though i do have the recite,it's a recent purchase) just a small napa house brand 12v coil.as soon as i hooked up this old accel she starts like new and runs smooth.it was having a hard time starting and had a miss off idle.it was so bad i thought i was going to have to reman or adjust the carb and tweak timing.wasn't fuel issue at all i guess.she just needed some more spark.of course it still could have a miss to some extent.i don't know yet as she's not on the road.waiting for exhaust shop to fit me in for some new duals.
(just got the car)
I'm glad you've got it sorted!
Would have been a bummer If you had started chasing down the 'fueling issue' to no avail.
Looks nice under the hood!

I hope you really enjoy your new car.
