needs wisdom! I have a great 85 6.9 4x4 that gave me a bit of trouble yesterday. Was pulling out of a parking lot when it died. And when I say died, I mean the truck quit running and there were no lights. It happened suddenly. I was able to get it into a parking space and after a few minutes, I turned the key and it started right up, minus the tail lights. I was able to get it most of the way home and when I made the right turn onto the road where my house was, it died again. I put it in park and the truck started right up (this time with all the lights working- brake lights, turn signal, the works).
Am I dealing with a short somewhere? Please help
I had a similar problem once, on a very important trip...my honeymoon...
Turned out to be a fusible link behind the passenger battery. Darn thing cracked inside the insulation so you couldn't see it burned through like it's supposed to.
To properly fix you need to cut the old fuse link out and put a new one of the same size in. I used an automatically re-setting breaker instead cause I wasn't familiar at the time with fusible links. 6 years no issues, except a short once but that was my fault.
Anyway same type of problem, would start and run then die randomly. I also had wicked air intrusion at the time which made it one hellatious few days till I figured it out finally.
Can't say much about the tail lights but maybe they are related. Fix the big problem first then see about the tail lights.
Thank you The Josh Bear. I figured it had to be a short in the system, just didn't know where to begin to look. I'll check the fusible link today and report back. I appreciate your input!
I kind of had a similar problem, except mine had no power at all. Ended up being a fusible link like the guy above me said. That and i cleaned the heck out of the battery posts and where the grounds connect to the block.
