The truck is a 1990 F-150 XLT Lariat 4x4 with a 5.0 V8. Ok today me and a friend came home from the nearby town. When we got home he wanted to test his stereo with a cd I had. Well everything went fine, he played and then shut off the cd player. Well then since it was foggy I told him to turn on his lights (brights and the lights on his rollbar). I wanted to take a picture. Well the lights were on probably 30 seconds and then we heard a pop from under the hood and then saw smoke on the passenger front in the engine bay. It looked and smelled like it was coming from somewhere around the battery. The lights don't turn on and the other electronics don't either. The dash lights turned on(the service lights) He turned on his key like he was going to start it and the fuel pump turned on (normal) and thats where we left it because he didn't want to try and start it. The small round thing (maybe a relay) behind the battery smelled burnt. Could that cause these problems? All help is greatly appreciated.
I guess the small round thing is a little vague. I can't go look at my truck (in Afghanistan) so I will have to skip that one. Head down to a junk yard, pluck one out of another truck. And replace. You may want to find out why there was so much of a draw it blew it anyhow. Were the lights fused? Check all your main bus fuses. Do a trace back of wires, and check fuses. The small round thing is bugging me, there is a few things in the engine bay that are electrical that fit that description. Anyhow, replace it, do your checks and try again. Not being an electrical expert myself, I would bring in my electrical guru buddy. If you don't have one like i do, find a respectable garage. Electrical makes me wary. My complete stereo install was a big step for me. I hope this helps in some way, if not maybe the push up will get someone who knows to help. I just hate seeing a no response thread.
It sounds like you're talking about the starter soleniod. One of the posts carries all the +12V power connections, including the main battery terminal connection.
Something obviously overheated. Look for burned wires first - burn marks on the soleniod (if that's the small round thing) could be blast marks from an overloaded wire blowing apart (...as if the circuit was installed without a fuse).
Since some of the auxilliary power circuits work, this is a localized failure - associated primarily with the lighting circuit and its connections -- like the connection point at the soleniod post -- my best guess.
