1. Which direction is advance on injection pump?
2. I loosened the pump but it turns maybe a 1/16" each direction. How do you advance it more? My guess is I'm needing to advance at least 8 degrees. Thanks
Passenger side is advanced, drivers is retard. Loosen as many injector lines you can get to then rotate it. You shouldn't make adjustments greater than a dime's width at a time. Even jiggling the pump can cause 2-3 degrees of timing change.
It's best to have a meter when playing with the pump, if you don't have one loosen the nuts just enough to turn the pump, hold the throttle to about 2000 rpm, rotate the pump until you get just a touch of diesel knock and set it there.

Am I picking this up correctly and you are suggesting altering I/P timing with the engine running? I don't think that is a good idea, could seriously damage components like that.

I know some one would say this, that is why it is very important to just loosen the nuts on the pump to turn it. so it can't move out of place.
I have done it many times.
