E450 V10 transmission swaps

Hey all, new here have a 2004 E450 RV, early 04 build so has the 4R100. If it goes out can I replace with a 5 speed Torqueshift since they were installed later in 04 with no big changes that I can tell....I am guessing an ECU from a 5 speed V10 E series will be needed...anything else?
Thanks

The five speed wasn't installed in V10 You'llSeries until 2005.

You will also need the complete wiring harness.

What do you hope to gain by swapping to a five speed?

Mark, thanks for replying, I have read a lot of your posts while searching around, always good info.

I plan to follow your guide tomorrow to flush the trans with fresh Mercon V.

So, just bought this motorhome, has 57k on it after I drove it 3500 miles in last two weeks. It will be my new work vehicle, in a hard year will see 60-70k miles. All towing. I am pulling a 22ft enclosed aluminum trailer...empty half the time at about 2500 lbs and loaded around 8000.

Went over scales just over 20k the other day fully loaded so just a hair over gcvw.

Shifts and goes fine, have a scan gauge coming to keep an eye on temps. My idea on the 5 speed swap was if the 4R100 fails in the future go to the 5 speed.

I know final drive will be same, but is the Torqshift not more robust? If I do some tuning to ECU, can I benefit with an extra gear and tow/haul mode to get things moving?

What kind of life can I expect from the 4R100 when it is subject to heavy towing. It tow mainly in OD as it seems to pull it most of the time ok with the 4:56 rear end, just dropping down to 3rd for the hill climbs.

The other day had to use second to make it up Raton pass leaving CO into NM. Not sure how much another gear on the 5 speed will help with situations like this.

So bottom line, am I wrong to think the 5 speed is not a big upgrade to the 4R100, especially in terms of heavy towing durability?
Thanks!

The five speed is more durable. I'd expect the 4R100 to be able to go 250,000 or more miles in your RV.

The five speed helps in launch only. The top three gears in the five speed are identical to the top three gears in the four speed. In the five speed you'd drop to third instead of second, but that's just a difference in names. Third gear in the five speed is 1.54:1, which is exactly second gear in the four speed.
