It appears that the rubber damper on my balancer has seen better days. Is this critical? Will/can this effect anything? Can this be repaired/rebuilt ? This is on a 66 F100 4X4 352 Thanks
Yes, the outer ring can eventually work its way off and fly into the radiator or go bouncing down the road behind you in traffic. They can be rebuilt. Here's one example of a place that does the work.
Not only that but it can't be very good at absorbing vibration either. Crankshafts twist back and forth by 2 degrees or so, that's why the heavy weight and rubber elastomeric is utilized, to smooth this out by leading and lagging the twist. The idea is to prevent cracks in, or broken crankshaft. Usually the outer ring slips enough off index to make the timing marks all but useless, too.
Thanks guys. I didn't think it was a good thing. In the brief research I have done since TA455HO replied, it seems the cost for a rebuild is roughly $100.00. I found DC has it for $130,00 new and MACS has one for $98.00 new. It seems to make sense to just buy a new one. Thanks again for the info and suggestions.
