I am trying to see if I have a bad wire somewhere. Where does the fuel sending unit and the fuel pump ground out too? thanks in advance

I belive it grounds thru the tank, are you having trouble with your fuel gauge ? on my 87 the wire going to the fuel tank is yellow/white if you switch on the ignition but dont crank it, then take a straight pin and stik in to the wire and ground it while someone looks at your gauge, if it moves when you ground it , then most likley its you sending unit or bad conection where it plugs into the tank,. hope this helps! yeah my gauge isn't reading right. it bounces around, it seems to read mroe gas then what i have and it holds in the same spot for a long time then goes down instead of gradually going down as I use up gas. I had the sending unit replaced and the gas tank at the same time last summer. I had the sending unit replaces again under warrenty afew months after that because the way it was acting and it got a little better but not much. I am trying to find what else might be causing it.

Well in that case if you've already replaced it 2 times, the only thing i know to tell you is to make shure the tank it self is grounded, make shure the electrical plug terminals at the tank are good shape and clean, it should be a single wire for the sending unit, trace it back to the dash look for any scrapes or cuts or any where it maybe grounding it self, other than that i dont know what to tell you!
hope you can use some of this. DW

They ground to the frame on the crossmember in front of the tank. Follow the wiring harness from the tank until you find it.

Thanks Steve, sorry I didn't respond back sooner. I was away for the week. I will get under there ASAP. If its the crossmemebr peice I am thinking of it is really rusted, won't that cause some problems for the ground?

Only if it's rusted under the ground terminal. You can pull the screw and brush/grind/sand it clean, then put a little grease on it and retighten it.
