See the thread about "transfer case shift motor". You should be glad you have the manual one. I am.

Yes, they're prone to failure. They seem to be finecky little systems. I've been thinking about converting to a manual setup from my electronic. I'll probably just fix the electric motor on mine; I think the stop on it is broken.

DW,

An opposing viewpoint....I never had a problem with the electronically shifted BW1356 in my 92. Probably still don't unless the fire melted the wiring harness down that far. Haven't been under it to check.

I can tell you that I had not ('til now) heard of anyone actually wanting to switch TO the electronic T-case. Its kind of like preferring auto hubs. Yeah they work and you may never personally have a problem with them but given the number of people who HAVE, you might consider keeping it the way it is. If you have manual hubs, you have to do more than punch the 4x4 button anyway to get it to engage.

From what I can tell by the problems people describe, the t-case shift motor fails if it's NOT used enough. It seems that if you lock it in every once in a while, it keeps it fairly clean & lubed, and it keeps working. Let the contacts corrode or the grease get dry, and they die. JMO

Fair enough. The 4WD was *rarely* used in my Bronco before I got it. It was limited mainly to a hunting trip every year or so, or whenever I "borrowed" it. I've finally got enough patience to take it apart and fix it, but I can't help but think that I wouldn't have to do anything if it was engaged by a lever.
