I agree to look at the expedition EL. I looked at one for my wife, and I would have bought it...but she sucks at driving lol. It was very nice (too nice for me) but it wasn't so nice that you would be nervous to put kids in it. Especially if it is the wife's vehicle and you won't be towing anything crazy with it or off roading. The way I see it, the expedition EL is the light duty version of the excursion anyways. Same size almost, but more creature comforts and a much smoother ride thanks to the soccer mom suspension!

To give you perspective on the price, I paid a bit more than half of what your buddy is asking and had mine shipped from 400 miles away(more $$). After receiving it and a fairly reputable dealer saying it had very little rust, I found several outright holes in the body. The turbo wasn't making any boost because the uppipes were disconnected in the rear, wiper motor was shot, rear lock didn't work, rear shocks were rusted to pieces, backup sensor didn't work, P side mirror still doesn't work...you get the picture but I could go on. If I could take that deal right now, I'd probably only be a few hundred dollars off from what he is asking! If you like it, the value is there in my book, but again, it's certainly a niche vehicle. Oh yeah, and after 4 months, my wife is yet to sit in the driver's seat.

Over two years and she has no desire to sit in the "big boy seat."

Sounds like you need something like this:

They'll be much roomier and capable than any full size suv ever will. A Transit will also be world's better in terms of refinement and safety compared to an Excursion.

There's also one of these:
