New Excursion owner

Proud new owner of a 2000 Excursion with 107,000 miles on it.

I have been wanting one since they day I saw the truck in the magazines so long ago.

Picked it up about a month ago from an owner who had it from new but unfortunately let it sit for a year without really using it or doing up keep on it, so now I have to layout for the repairs.

I'm not to bothered since I got a good deal on it, but I'm an impatient person and I want everything done now, but time and my bank account wont let that happen.

The transmission was rebuilt about 18 months ago, so I guess that's a good thing.

The main problems I'm having is all the door actuators are bad, but I already ordered and received them with will have them installed this week.

My front passenger window motor works slowly and sporadically, so I know that needs to get replaced.

I did need to fill up the a/c unit with one of those charging cans and it blows cold, do I need to be concerned with needing to replace anything soon or is this pretty typical of this era of fords?

I also need to replace the interior carpet since it's beat to hell and he also transported dogs in the truck.

I found a few places to get carpet from, but I don't know what brand is good and how long they last compared to factory carpets.

I'm going to try and tackle replacing the carpet myself, but I have a feeling that it'll end up having to get finished by a professional.

I'm also interested in replacing the steering wheel and recovering the seats.

Quite surprisingly the speakers still sound good, but that's all going to get replaced with newer equipment and a back up camera.

How long is the suspension good on these trucks? I haven't had an suv in 6 years so I'm not used to a softer suspension and I don't know how much play its supposed to have.

Also, the rear end wants to "roll out" or "swing out" if I hit certain pavement or bumps.

Is that typical and can I do anything about it?

I'm not a fan of the tires and wheels, so maybe changing those out will change the behavior of the truck.

What sites do most people go to that have good products that they would recommend to get parts from

Thanks for reading and I hope to get plenty of use out of this site and gain knowledge from peoples experience's.

Take your time changing cosmetic things right away. Maintenance items first, unless you have records. Change fluids and filters. Safety items too. Tires, brakes, seatbelts. Then you might find bigger things like trans or exhaust need repair/replacing.
A ton of ways we can help you spend your money!

The suspension sucked once it rolled off the lot YES, crap handling in normal & YES there is lots you can do about it
1st is to look through the tech folder & read for about 2 days, Then come back with any questions. I'm sure you'll have a few

Thanks for the replies.

I just came from a cobalt ss so I know all about having to read up on a vehicle

The first thing I did was change the oil, brake fluid and power steering fluid and a fuel system cleaning and differential flush.

The brakes feel fine but I'm going to change them anyways for piece of mind.

I'll give the tech folder a good read and hopefully find some answers.

Thanks again

my head is spinning from all that i have read in last 24 hours

one thing I know I'm going to do first is the suspension upgrades and reading the one post about 2wd upgrades has me confident that it'll get rid of most of the driving problems i have.

One thing I am going to look into is a tune for my engine.

Anyone have experience with the tune on the v10?

Is it worth the investment?

5Star Tuning is the fan favorite around here for V-10 tunes, they know their way around these motors!
I tow an 11k TT and use their tunes all the time, the tunes make a very noticeable performance improvement. I haven't ran the stock tunes for three years now, I use the 87 Econo tune for all of my solo running around and the 87 Performance tune for most towing chores and the 89 Performance for towing trips that include a lot of hill climbing. It's not just the little extra output from the motor that makes the tunes so nice, the transmission performance increase is so much better than stock, well worth the investment to me!
Of my 3 major performance mods so far the gear swap from 3.73 to 4.88 was the biggest performance increase, the custom tunes are the next best because they make the trans work so much better and my Banks headers are third with a noticeable improvement across the entire RPM range.

Welcome to the world of EX's!

Tunes from 5Star were one of my best bang for my buck upgrades. I didn't notice much extra power, but sure made it shift much better. I also did the banks headers following in Tom's foot steps, definitely worth the work.
