Transfer case trying to engage!

Alright so I need some advice, help or pointers as to what or where I should be looking. Anything will help. My transfer case tried engaging itself in to 4wd while driving on the freeway, I got it to go back in to 2wd and that was that. Next day it continued to do the same. After getting under the track and by hand making sure it was all the way in 2wd I continued to drive slowly but realized that it was still trying to engage. So I'm stuck, everything appears to be tight and where it belongs.....help!!!

2wd460 is cause I have a 76 f250 2wd with a 460. But my problem is on my 95 4x4 powerstroke. If you can think of anything that would let me know I'm running out of ideas. I checked fluid level just for the hell of it.

Is it going into 4 high or 4 low? Is it really going into 4WD or only does the dash indicate so?

It doesn't indicate it on the dash. But you can hear it and feel it. As I'm driving when it starts to happen I'm no longer able to drive until I pull over and come to a complete stop and wiggle the 4wd shifter. It won't even go in to park when it's trying to engage.

Do you have auto hubs?

My 95 f150 had autos and they malfunctioned and did exactly what you describe. Sounded terrible and felt worse . just going along and BAM all heck happens like I had hit something
A set of warn manuals went on. I attempted to tear the autos down, clean, inspect, relube and assemble.. That was a waste as the next day it did it again.
