'03 Explorer - Subwoofer Size?

Just bought an '03 Explorer NBX. Didn't purchase the audiophile system because I wanted to have my own dvd system installed. I notice the right rear panel seems to be where a factory sub woud be installed as it is ported for sound. My question: what size sub fits that area, and has anyone attempted to use that location for an aftermarket sub? Just by looking, it appears that it would hold an 8" sub. Also, any special mounting needs or suggestion from anyone that has used the space.

I know, I ought to go for a ten or a twelve in a cabinet, but using a sub that can be hidden would keep the wife happy.

The stock sub is an 8" but no one makes an aftermarket enclosure for the 03 Explorer yet. JL is designing one but for some reason they are making it for the left side so if you have the rear A/C you wont be able to use it.

Thanks. Any idea whether an 8" will easily install into the stock position if there wasn't a factory sub already mounted there? I'm just wondering before I peel that back panel off.
