Loose Pinion

Hey all. Got under the truck yesterday to look at replacing the pinion seal and some u-joints.

When wiggling the pinion around i get some play and wanted to know if this was acceptable.

Ford 9" out of a 72 F100.

Is it possible to change the pinion bearing and seal without re-setting up the gears?

Likely the pinion bearings are bad. Unless the pinion nut just happen to loosen up over time?

Need to do some more investigating. There are a few ways you can repair this.

Tonight I will pull the axles and check the rotating torque on the pinion nut. Should be within 6-15ft/lbs? That should tell me if its loose.

I need to pull the whole third member, because its leaking left and right.

My main question is can I pull the pinion carrier. Replace the pinion bearing, seal and crush sleeve. Without messing up backlash.

I found ultrarangers post earlier when searching. That actually helped me order the correct bearings. Now I need to figure out what bearings I need to replace the pinion bearing and seals.

Inner and outer bearings. Seal, new crush washer, and new pinion nut?

Anything else?

You should be able to unbolt the pinion carrier and "unscrew" it from the ring gear. Giving you free access to replace the bearings/seal.

The rotating spec is just the pinion, not including the ring gear so you have to remove it to check it. With it being so loose, I guess it is a moot point. You will just have to replace the bearings/crush sleeve/seal and then torque the nut back to 13-15 in/lb rotation.

It should not mess with backlash, as the pinion is pulled down on the large bearing and that sets your pinion depth. Since that isn't going to change for the most part you should be able to rebuild it and re install it without messing anything up.

Make sure you keep track of any shims when you remove the pinion carrier. That sets your depth.

I replaced the pinion bearings on my 8.8 in my '89 without any fuss or having to change the side shims.

Thanks freightrain.

Does anyone have PN for all the pinion seals and crush washers?

Oy.... and there it is. There's the cause of the extreme backlash. I'm surprised the rear end wasn't howling like a bloodhound.

Yup, that's a known weak spot with Ford 9s... repro carriers from the likes of Strange and Currie add extra "meat" to support around that pinion bearing boss.

My dad picked up a 3rd member from the junkyard today. I have yet to see it. Hopefully it's the right one.

What gear ratio is in the broken 3rd member?

3.50:1. They said this one is too. And 28 spline axles.

Busted Ford 9" on a common vehicle? Hmm. I remember T-Bolts breaking cases in the mid-sixties but Ford fixed that with ribbing. Hio? Ultra?
Tell us OP, how did you do it?

No idea. Truck has a 4" lift. Noticed driveline vibration a month ago so I stopped driving for a bit. Checked underneath and the ujoint right after the carrier bearing on the driveshaft was destroyed. I'm wondering if vibration did it.

Bad u joint.

The problem with the gray iron 3rd member failures in the Big 427 powered Galaxies was resolved with the case revision to the nodular iron 3rd members. C2AW-A or C4AW-B case. N-cases prior to 1970 will not have the large "N" on the face of the 3rd member.

I put a factory '75 D0OW-B 9-inch N-case in my truck. --Daytona pinion support, 31-spline 4-pinion Traction-Lok differential with 3.50 gears.

After I cleaned it up.

My '69 C7AW-E single vertical rib 9-inch 3rd member the N-case replaced.
