If the gears look nice and the bearings aren't sloppy, then you could run it. Somebody else was. You could tighten the lash up a bit and see how the pattern looks and see if it gets noisy.
If you get everything cleaned up nicely, you can roll the gears using the pinion and you should be able to feel any vibration. That will tell you if they are noisy. Any vibration will turn into a "ring" or howling noise at speed.
