A while ago I replaced the leaky pinion seal of my 1969 9" differential. Now I see it dripping again, but from the front of the pinion flange. It looks like it's leaking through the splines between the pinion and flange. Do I need to apply some kind of sealant here, or is something wrong with the pinion or flange?
Remove the nut and and see how much movement you have in splines. Wiggle the yoke up and down. If there is an excessive amount. More than likely the splines are worn in the yoke. The pinion splines are usually good because its made from a harder metal. If everything seems ok, apply some good silicone behind the nut and retighten it. Alot of gm's come with it already just for this reason.
When I replaced the pinion seal, one of the things I checked was play in the bearings, and found none I could detect. The flange did not have noticeable play on the pinion, but I did notice that it slid off the pinion pretty easily. I'll have to get into it again this weekend and try to deal it up.
