I bought a jump starter/charger for my 2002 7.3L Diesel. It's a Schumacher 6/12V Manual Wheel Charger with Engine Start, 4/30/60/300A. When I've used it for jump starting the Diesel at 300a, the cables seem to get real hot very quickly. I spent $219 and wonder if I did the best I can do. I've seen comments on the forum that people use two batteries to jumpstart these vehicles. As a general rule I see myself using it to charge batteries. I don't know if the fast charge is a problem with the batteries but it is convenient. I also have two of the small chargers 12/6v 2amp/6amp(I think). I wish it would shut off when charged, the timer is a pain, sorta. Thoughts?
I don't normally jump my truck unless I'm in an emergency or great need to do so. Get a trickle charger to keep it up when not driving.
This is sound advice. Our Trucks take upwards of 720 Amps to start. Consider a Schumacher SE-1-12S-CA Fully Automatic Onboard Battery Charger - 1.5 Amps.

+1, Schumacher has never let me down for the price. They are electronic, they die just like your alternator or any other electrical device.

So I would need just 1 plugged into I'm guessing the passenger battery terminal?
when using that large wheel charger, set it to 60 amp for 10-15 minutes before trying to start to put a surface charge into the batteries. then after 15 minutes flip the switch to 300 and it will crack rite off.
Recall any charger needs to be "sized" for the Ah reserve of the battery. Two in parallel is a large amount of capacity, the 30 amp setting would essentially be a "slow" charge. Stay on top of them so they will stay equalized.
