I'd like to start off and see how everyone's doing. I've been reading through all the forums here for over a year now, but this is my first post. The problem is: after receiving a jump the truck will run for 15-25 minutes then it will die, batteries dead. The starter will engage, make about a 1/4 revolution, then just click. Just replaced the alternator, and the same thing happens. I tried taking the batteries to a parts store to have them tested, but they seemed to be the most incompetent people around. Even if the batteries were bad, the truck should still run if there is a good alternator, right?
Truck is an early 99. Has 4" downpipe, 5" exhaust (straightpiped), AFE Intake, Quadzilla 4 pos. flip chip, Guages, ATS Propane, 12" lift and 44's
Thanks for any info.
i would rob a batteries ou of a friends vehicle and once you start your truck, unhook one battery and put his battery in your truck, then unhook the other battery out of your truck. so now you only have one battery hooked up. if it does the same thing, its not your batteries. then replace the alternator i guess is the next step. does it sound like the starter stays engaged constantly??? this could run the batteries down also. then change the starter or start it then unhook the starter cables and see if the batteries go dead first, you'll figure it out. dont worry
You may have more than one problem there. I've seen lot's of times where the batteries will just expire even with a good charging system. They just wear out after a while. Also I would check the voltage at the batteries right after you jump start it. It should be 14 volts, give or take a tenth or two. No more.
Thanks for the responses. I just replaced the alternator and it still does the same thing. The indash voltage guage reads less than 12 volts after the jump and keeps going down. I cleaned the battery terminals, and checked all the cables for good connections. It's really getting to be a pain jumping the truck this many times just to do these tests. Any suggestions on an easier way to do this?
ok.... i think i narrowed it down to the glow plug relay. i called the local autoparts store (autozone) and they do not have a listing for it. i was wondering if anyone knows the part number. i seem to recall seeing that i can get one for an international engine, but finding the thread is very difficult, due to the search feature being down. any info would be greatly appreciated.
