Injector Test ?? and Advice
Don't tell your wife I suggested anything that drags her under the hood - particularly the VCs. You know how women get when you give them cause for the stink-eye... I get enough of that when I don't put my coffee cup in the dishwasher.
started truck up and performed visual inspection.
1) no oil spewing out of the bottom of any injectors
2) no apparent issues with push rods
3) oil appears to be flowing under each deflector plate
4) don't know if visual would show any issues from any other o-rings
But, I still have the thumping sound coming from where the air connector for the turbo connects to the manifold. Through the intake side (where the intercooler piping connects) I still hear a thumping or hollow whomping sound.
This sound can be heard at the tail pipe as well, though no where near as loud.
There were no obnoxious smell or smells at the tail pipe.
I disconnected the electrical connection to each injector one at a time and heard the requisite change in idle sound, so I am assuming that each injector is working as expected. After each disconnection, there was no change in the thumping sound from any one cylinder.
As a side note, there was about 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of oil collected in the lowest point of the intercooler piping on the driver's side.
I think I need to do the compression test before I pull the injectors.
At the same time I will ohm test the glow plugs just to be sure.
Any thoughts on the "thumping sound"? Could still still be from the o-rings which are likely to be in poor shape?
Thanks,
Jim
The thumping... a loose injector will knock like crazy. A "dirty" injector will knock, but it's a different sound. When I say dirty, I mean it may have gone long on an oil change at some time... or the loose injectors allowed soot into the oil or fuel.
Here's a loose injector or two:
