missing nuts?????

I just replaced my radius arm bushing, and the I Beam bushings. I noticed there was not a nut on top of the bolt that holds the radius arm to the I Beam. Is there suppose to be one on them? If so do you know what size the nut is? Thanks in advance.

There's a long bolt that goes through the radius and I-beam. There are two nuts (lock-type) that go on this bolt. One is under the coil spring seat and the other is on top of the washer that retains the coil spring. I can get you the size when I get home...but someone probably has it by memory. Let me know if you can't find it...I have extras.

65oldie, If I have not already done so; welcome to FTE!!

Posting a link to similar thread: ND included diag. post #10

It has been a few weeks since replaced the Radius Arm Bushings on the 65. If member serves me, once I set the radius arm in position on the I Beam I inserted the bolt from the bottom and installed the nut then torqued to spec's; believe the torque is determined by the size of bolt, on my 65, around 240 ft. lbs. I then set the bell shaped washer over the bolt and nut and then the spring, and finally, jacked the I beam in position and installed the shocks. Again Welcome!

This is what it looks like on both sides. There is no nut on them or washer.

Thanks for the welcome. I pulled up the link you posted and there is a diagram. Thanks a lot.

I find it hard to determine from the pic, appears there is a nut under the bell shaped cover/washer; otherwise, if the bolt is installed correctly, from the bottom up, then is would have fallen on the ground. The bolt is installed with the threads facing up, the nut is installed and torqued then the bell shaped cover is placed on top, the opening/hole in the bell shaped cover allows for the bolt to protrude if necessary. Speaking from experience, you can not install the bell over the bolt then install the nut and torque to 240 ft. lbs. or it would no longer appear bell shaped but rather more like a flat washer. I am in the camp that says the nut is installed.

That makes since. I didn't pull the coil spring off when I changed the radius bushings or the I beam bushing. I guess I need to pull the passenger side off, because I used my impact to losen the bolt and it is dropped about 1/4"

On both the 65 and the 66 that I have dismantled...as well as the 74, that bolt protrudes up through the he spring seat (cup) and has a large washer and another nut. That holds the spring in the seat. The other nut is under the dome shaped spring seat....unless I'm missing something here. The patina would suggest all parts are original but it doesn't look like the ones I've seen. I'll try to dig out the assembly diagram.

Aahhh....looking at the diagram in post #10 that Dave linked for us. There's an inset that shows the spring retaining nut and washer in the upper right and indicates "1966". The diagram otherwise applies to 1965-1969. I guess they went back to the "2-nut" setup by '74. Rightfully so....as two nuts are better than one!
