I noticed yesterday, after getting out of my car to close the garage door, that I have water dripping from the tail pipe of my '93 Explorer. What would cause this? If I was to guess, I'd say there was a blown gasket somewhere allowing coolant into the exhaust, but I have no idea if that is correct, since I've only just started to teach myself to work on cars the last 3 months or so. Am I close, or would it be something different?
Water is a natural product of combustion. If you see water coming from your tailpipe, it is normal. If you see steam, and it smell like coolant, then you have a problem.
Water in the exhaust pipe is the major cause of rusty tailpipes, the water sits in the pipes and muffler and rust starts to form.
What your seeing is perfectly normal. I would be worried if I did not see the water. That means that the engine is not working as efficiently as it could.
Perfect combustion only produces four things, Heat and Light (flames), and H2O and CO2 (Water and Carbon Dioxide).
