Was wondering what type of fluid to use in the rear differential in my 93 explorer. Haynes manual says to use GL-5 SAE 90 hyphoid gear lube, but I was unable to find any straight 90 at autozone or discount. They had 75W-90 and 80W-90. Is it ok to use either of these?
They don't put tags on them anymore. Pretty much any GL-5 will work in the Ford 8.8. I don't think the straight 90 is made anymore. The shop that rebuilt my 8.8 used 85W-140. The new ones use 75W-140 synthetic.
My 97 F150 has a tag on the rear cover specifically stating"75w140 SYNTHETIC OIL ONLY". At 83k miles I changed it and went with Redline Synthetic 80w140.
I'll go look on my differential cover, it probably needs new gear oil since it has 327,650 miles and I don't know if the oil ever got changed...
But if the tag isn't on it, what's good for a 1987 Bronco II (7.5" rear, open differential) and how can I tell if I have a Dana 28 or Dana 35 front axle, and what oil for it?
The index they use for gear oil increases twice as fast as that for motor oil. IOW, a 40-viscosity motor oil is the same viscosity as a 80-viscosity gear oil. That brings them a little closer together.
There are other differences between motor oil and gear oil, such as pH and anti-foaming additives, so it would be unfortunate to think one can interchange them.
