Hey guys got a serious question for you all. I gotta a 88 F 150 with a 5 peed. I recently put a new clutch in my truck about 4 months ago. I know for a fact that it was gear lube that I drained out ( everyone knows that smell). So I put gear lube back in. I recently saw in my Haynes manual that it calls for ATF not gear lube. Now for the million dollar question,,,, Will it hurt anything,, bearings etc?? should I drain and flush and install the mercon?? And will using the gearlube cause my trans to run hotter than the mercon,,, my shifter seems to get pretty hot ( at the base) when I do along road trip. And I guess that explains why she is so hard to shift in the winter time til she warms up.
Any answers??? Does anyone know for sure????
Thanks guys!!!!!
The M5OD does call for ATF (Mercon III in my '92) I have seen others on this site who have used gear lube and even 10W30. ATF is what the manual says and ATF is all I use.
You can run gear lube, mine shifted harder and made alot of noise when I ran it. I would recommend that you run Royal purple synochromax. Works great in mine and stopped most of the noise.
My friend recently had his t5 rebuilt and when we picked it up from the transmission shop the dude had put a atf tag on the trans. I asked him about gear lube and he said to use atf, that it would help it shift easier.
I changed mine a while ago and I was told that the M5OD has small needle bearings that require the thinner ATF to adequately lube them. Their opinion was that gear oil would work but it would shorten the life of the tranny.
I installed Walmart synthetic ATF with a bottle of Molyslip.
