I just installed a new one and the instructions clearly state never to oil it. I have read on the forums that air tool oil may work, since it may not hurt the diaphragm. If it is indeed going out...ya got nothing to lose.
Hello to all.
I own and daily drive a 92 f250 7.3 idi na diesel
can the vacuum pump be serviced? Mine is going out unfortunately. I remember reading some where that it can be oiled.
Oil what part of it??? Vacuum pump is two parts. One is the drive that has sealed ball-bearings. The other is the pressed-together tin-can that has the vacuum diaphram and check-valves inside. Oiling the sealed bearings certainly won't help anything. Nor will oiling the vacuum diaphram.
There is a cam inside that transfers the rotation into a up and down motion
that moves the diaphram. I seem to remember where people would use a synthetic
lube. I think you have to remove a pressed in cap to change the lubricant. If your pump is
going out I doubt that would help. If its not pumping enough air you probably have a problem with the diaphram or check valves. AFAIK, there's nothing you can do with that.

Years back - you could buy just the replacement tin-can with a new diaphram and check valves. Use to cost around $50 from CAV. For Ford or GM. Not worth it anymore since a complete new pump is pretty cheap. I bought one a few months ago for $60.
Now that you say that, I think to lube the cam you just pull the diaphram can off and dump the oil
out and replace with new synthetic. Dont know what weight.
