Vacuum pump?

Hey Folks, My Marti report lists one of the options as a vacuum pump. At first I thought that must mean the vacuum assist on the brakes. However I noticed a spot above the alternator that looks like something was removed. I had a vacuum pump on my old 6.9 as the diesels need supplemental vacuum. Was there an actual stand alone vacuum pump for these trucks? If so what was this the main source for vacuum needs? Or was this an emission item?

Thanks

By deduction I think was actually an air pump for the emissions system.

I’m still leaning towards it being the brake booster but since it was born in California an air pump is a possibility.

CA? Definitely an air pump then.

California is so backwards they don't even know if they are blowing or sucking!

9A486 is the basic number for a smog pump. No 9A486's listed for "regular production" 1972 Bumpsides. Only Bumps with one listed possible are
67 F100 with a 352.
68 F100 with a 360/390.
67/68 F100 with 240/300.
***************************
2A451 is the basic number on a vacuum pump. No pickups listed with a 2A451 in my 64/72 truck slide.

2X Hio. I'd bet it was a belt driven smog pump. But special ordered with one for some reason. Or maybe the truck was special ordered with something and Ford decided it better get a smog pump also. If I am right, there should be a 6 digit number in the D.S.O. spot on the door's warranty tag.

Nope only has a District Code 72 for San Jose. Maybe the vacuum pump is referring to the brake vacuum assist.

You are prolly right. Just for giggles, can you post a pic of that spot where it looks like something was removed?

Smog pump: 1966/67 F100 240/300/352; 1968 F100 240/300/360/390 but not all '68's came with it.

No smog pumps on 1969/72 F100's or on 1966/72 F250/350's.

Here's the 1966 F100 352 pic. Setup similar to 1967/68 (no pic for either).

I will tomorrow but I can tell you now that it’s right where that pump in Bills diagram is located.

So here it is hopefully picture is up. Notice the bracket and it appears the alternator is sitting lower than usual.

Something is amiss. No F100/350 came w/a vacuum pump, no F250/350 or 1969/72 came w/a smog pump.

I cannot imagine that Marti would refer to a P/B booster as a vacuum pump, but...

AFAIK, Marti doesn't fill out the build sheets, he has employees that do it. All he does is sign them, but I'd be surprised if he even reads them first.

I'd suggest contacting Marti personally to find out what the 'scoop' is.

Marti calls it an Optional Vacuum Booster. I will send them an email. However what do you see in the picture? I have no experience with this truck or motor so I have no reference point on that bracket that appears to have something missing.

I haven't a clue. The last time I looked under the hood of a bump, Reagan was prez.

Does or did your truck have A/C? Is the engine original, or could it have been swapped?

Here's a pic of factory A/C, there are two idler pulleys, the one at the left...attaches to the alternator bracket.

Yes it’s original motor and it did have the A/c option and the idler pulley bracket is the one on the left side. So that leads me to believe they are refering to brake booster.
