Hey Guys,
My truck has a stock 302. Currently its has a 600 CFM Holley carb. I'm thinking this might be too much carb for this engine. What do you guys think? What carb would be the best?
So some folks say..:There are several factors in selecting a carburetor, like what is the maximum rpm, what rpm range is used for maximum power, how many cubic inches is the engine, and what is the purpose/use of the truck, tow/pull, or just a DD?
:For a ball park figure a 600 cfm with vacuum secondaries on a 302 modified without power adders is a pretty solid choice, if it is a stock engine then a smaller carb will give better performance on the street like 450-470 cfm. Too big of a carb is worse than too small of a carb.
And or: I run a 480cfm Autolite on my stock 302. It performs much better than with the 600cfm Edelbrock that was on it when I bought it, which would cause it to stumble if you gave it gas too fast.
The truck is running duals, but not headers. I will most likely go to headers at some point. When I step down on the gas the truck feels like something is holding it back. It will sometimes stumble too. It also drinks gas like I drink beer. LOL I've had several 302s over the years, and never had one go through the gas like this one.
