I just purchased a 1976 ford f250 ranger xlt highboy. I need new tires and want to get off of the split rims. What would be the best size for this truck??
It is also a 2 barrel carburetor and I am looking into upgrading to a 4 barrel. What would be the best choice?
Is it all stock suspension wise? Then some 33's or 35's (305's or 315's) no matter what size, get the rims in a 16", that way you have a ton of tire choices.
Size motor? Edelbrock aluminium intake and matching carb or a Holley truck avenger carb. The combinations are endless.
Careful it can spiral out control, once you get new rims and tires, then you will want bigger tires and that can cause a need for a lift kit.
Just a new intake and carb, then you will want headers, cam, straight up timing.
1st off, give it a good over all tune up with plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, ect...
Why upgrade to a 4 barrel? Unless you're going to upgrade the intake with it, but most people just use a 4-2 barrel adapter which is useless. If you are going to actually do it right and upgrade the intake, I'd actually upgrade the exhaust first with some headers and duals to get full advantage of upgraded intake.
I have a '75 with 315 75 16s on 10" wheels. No issues whatsoever, and mine is on stock suspension (new springs). I may do an add a leaf in the front in the spring, as the rake is a little much for my taste.
Make sure you have acceptable backspacing on the wheels; I had to be sensitive to tie rod end clearance. Not sure what all is different between a drum and disk brake spindle/ tie rod connecting point.
I have a Holley 4160 on my truck (390), with an Edelbrock Streetmaster intake (I think I am going to change that). Seems to do just fine. I think the truck avenger carbs are overpriced for what seems like a regular VS Holley with a different vent tube set up (that you can make at home).
