I have a bad VSM but are the only options for replacement the dealership? What happens if someone takes their truck to a private diesel mechanic who makes the right diagnosis? What does he do?

That may not be an option either. Unless the Dealership has one in stock or can locate one. Motorcraft no longer has parts manufactured for our Generation Truck.
I had posted here last December or January a Memo on a Bulletin Board where I was working that day that said they [Motorcraft] stopped last year.
The options were to : (I'm summarizing)
1. Use existing Stock until exhausted.
2. Attempt to help the customer locate one in the Ford Proprietary System or,
3. Make every effort to assist the customer should he/she provide a part which appears to be safe and in good working order with installation.

The independent dealer is at the same fate as Ford. But, Dealerships ARE NOT required to sell to 3rd party's. The independent probably has accounts with regional supply centers anyway if they do business on a daily basis.
As for programming, anyone with a J2534 Pass-through Device and access to a Motorcraft membership can do it.

I keep seeing this. What is the VSM. Why are there all of a sudden so many of this thing failing. I've found wreckers to be the best place to find parts now a days. Like said, ford has nothing.
I installed a new VSM in my 2002 F350 and it crossed over as the part number for a 2005 F Super Duty and even came with a key code card for the numeric door code (Excursion/Expedition/Explorer/2005+ Super). The 2002 did not have these though and have not really looked into adding. You ay want to see if the newer security module is still manufactured.
As far as I have been told, the programming for the VSM requires the old VSM to be plugged in and accessible using the three plugs, and a new one can only be programmed using data off the old one. Don't ask what happens if the original is fried!

Interesting about the 2005 to 2002 part swap. Any chance you can pull the part # for the 2005 for us? I tried looking up the 2005 part online, but can't come up with it.
If the old VSM is fried and they can't pull the program info, the techs can put together a build sheet for the new one using your VIN. However, from posts I've read, they're very prone to fail the first time they attempt. It seems they get confused on the "states" of things, and have dome lights come on when the door is closed, instead of vice versa.
