I'm putting and internal balanced 460 into a 1990 f350 with a manual transmission. I need to find a flywheel that will work. I know there are a few places that sell them but I'm having troubles finding them through searches. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I can see that he has a flexplate on the older engine now, but if he has a '90 truck with a ZF that will fit a 385 he should already have a flywheel...
Or he could get the flywheel for that combo and have it neutral balanced.
I bought a new '93 flywheel (with ring gear!) for ~$100.
How much would the shop charge to make it zero?
Its got to be better than the $600 L&L gets...
You know, I never considered that. That is brilliant really. That would get my vote for sure, but we do need to know what bellhousing he is going to use. I'm unfamiliar with the zf tranny and the hole mounting pattern. Is it the same as a 4 speed top loader tranny like the t-18 and np-435? I know for a fact that a flywheel from a mid 80s 460 will not work with a 351/400 bellhousing...
ZF's have an integral bell, just like a C6.
You need one from a 460, to fit a 460...
Some say you can drill new holes in a diesel ZF-5 bell to make it fit, but first is too high and the other ratios too close for a gas engine with a 5k redline.
And what do you use for a starter?
Windsor ZF's have an internal (concentric) slave/release bearing unit, and a smaller bell altogether.
L&L, Summit, and Jegs all have the internally balanced 460 flywheels. Unfortunately, they all want a pretty penny for them - usually they're $300+ just for the flywheel!
The only Flywheels that were stock were 2wd 460's (and maybe the Super Cobra Jet 429 Mustang), and finding a factory or parts-store equivalent is impossible - I spent a few weeks calling around to find ANY other vehicle that came with one, and no one locally had a zero-balance flywheel.
Getting a 79+ Flywheel and having it rebalanced by the machine shop may be the best answer - they can chuck it up and take material off until it's back to the right balance.
2wd internal balance 460's were all automatics (C6)
It wasn't until 1983 you could get a manual gearbox (T-19)
That's right! Dur! Brain fart.
I thought the Super Cobra Jet 429/460's were manual? There's a listing in parts catalogs for manual transmission parts for that motor size in those bodies (Mustang/Ranchero).
