Fuel pump issues

I have a 1976 F350, 460 supercab and I have a gas leak at the fuel pump. I've replaced the two fuel lines, and the screw-on cannister with filter and new gasket. Best I can tell the leak is near the top of the pump--it's running down over the fuel lines and cannister. It's definitely not leaking anywhere on the top side of the engine. The pump was replaced about 20 years ago. Do pumps develop leaks in the housing? That's the only thing I can figure that's going on. There is no leak where the pump attaches to the engine; that's all nice and dry.

Unless someone can suggest something else to check, looks like I'll go ahead and replace the pump. Looks like access will not be too bad if I remove the oil filter. Think I can get by without removing the lower radiator hose. Now my question is what's the slickest way to make sure the pump lever ends up in the right place on the cam eccentric. I can't remember much about this from when I installed it 20 years ago.

I know some of you pros will have some advice, so thanks now.

I know a sealed/crimp assembled style fuel pump can leak at the crimped seam. Not sure on the screw on housing type.

As far as install to make you the arm is under the eccentric cam, I tilt it with the arm angled way down, then go to install. Start the top bolt with the bottom of the mount plate still a off the block.

Once the top bolt is started and in just a bit, I push down on the bottom of the mount plate and wait to feel the pressure of the arm under the cam. The start the bottom bolt.

It is the crimped style--a Borg-Warner unit (I think they were bought by Federal Mogul) no longer available so the "lifetime" warranty is worthless. Can't complain too much; it did last 20 years. I found a Carter pump at Rock Auto; glad I didn't have to go with an Airtex unit. Not flaming Airtex, but believe Carter makes a better pump. Who knows, they could all be made in the same Chinese plant.

Thanks for the install instructions.
