I have the 7.3 and I'm getting about 19-21 mpg as an average. I have the 44 gallon tank and can go about 850-900 miles on that full tank. That's mixing highway miles and city miles throughout the week. My X is great on gas...

That's really good! I'm only getting 18.5 at BEST all hwy with a range of 800 miles at 75-80mph, BTW all excursions came with the 44 gallon tank.

Uh, er...I'm guessing you will only put gas in the 7.3 tank once.

I've only got 850 miles to the tank once. When I first got the truck and drove from LA to San Francisco and back. Drove miss daisy and feathered the throttle.
I must be doing something terribly wrong... I have the 6.8L V10 2002 and I'm looking at my lie-o-meter and it seems to be telling the truth.
I filled up and set my trip at full to see what type of MPG I was getting and here is the result. The lie-o-meter is telling what was left in the tank.

It looks like you have some non-stock rims/tires on your EX, have you verified the speedo/odometer error with a GPS? My EX with 35.28" tall tires shows a 12% error between the indicated MPH/Odometer vs GPS speed, that adds up some when hand calculating the MPGs. Maybe someday I'll find someone with AE to recalibrate my tire size to set things right.

Guys, always remember, the overhead estimated MPG's are based on previous miles driven, not based on what you have left in the tank.
Even if it was based on what fuel remains in the tank, the float system Ford uses in the tank is so woefully inaccurate it's ridiculous.
The best way to get the most accurate reading on the overhead is to reset it every time you start your vehicle and drive it.

Exactly. Im not sure of the span of time or miles but it actually samples slower or less. I notice the number stays the same for the same type of driving vs if I hook up a trailer. If Im at half tank and it reads 14.2, then hook up a trailer, it takes a while but eventually comes down. If you reset on every start, you can watch an active change as you accelerate or coast. As with all electronic gauging, its slow and only shows ranges of indication. If you see an issue on the gauge, it already too late. This is why we put aftermarket mechanical gauges on our trucks.
I stopped watching that number and just fill 'er up when I hit 1/4 tank. I put my display on outside temp. If you're that worried about mileage, dont drive it every day or make short trips. Get a beater
My meter and speedo are pretty accurate. (Tires are 285/75/16s) About 18-19 on the highway, about 13-14 in town. I refuel when the fuel light comes on or am approaching 0 miles until empty. I have been doing that since I got it with 99k, now has 187k.

No, I have not... I have 33's on my EX. I will have to take a look.

Not that I cant afford to drive it. I want to make sure I have it running well. That is my only concern. If I can get it running better and more efficiently then I would like to do that.
I'm impressed with the MPG's that was posted and I know I'm getting half or less currently. I will benchmark it with the GPS and see what I come up with... You guys with 19 MPG, that is awesome! Most of my miles are expressway driving to and from work. Looks like about 38 miles each way.

Aaron, you do realize that the guys getting 19-20 MPG are wheeling diesels, right? A "typical" driver doing a 50/50 mix of true city/hwy driving should EXpect to see 10-ish MPG with the mighty V-10. With a little tightening of the nut behind the wheel (being more conscious of how you drive and not being a "typical" driver ) that same mixed driving can work it's way up to the 12-ish mark.
And once you figure out what your GPS true vs displayed Odo difference is you will get a little bump in those hand calculated MPG numbers too.
The best tankful ever in my V-10 EX was done on a hot Summer day with 6 adults onboard, it was about 80% Interstate highway with a few small coastal Maine towns thrown in that was hand calculated to 15.5 MPG. My normal mix at that time for daily use was 14-ish. But I am pretty focused on getting the best mileage that I can, my daily driver is a '94 Geo Metro that I have logged a few 62+ MPG tanks on, I make it a game as I drive.
Nope WE3ZS, I did not realize that... That escaped me in the thought process. Makes a lot more sense to me now, mistake. I fell head over hills for this truck and she got my nose open!
