Help with door seals

Hi Gang

Putting some of the truck back together. I have door seals for Mid Fifty, Hollow core. They came in a plastic bag, pretty much scrunched up. I took them out of the bag and laid them on the carpet floor in my office. Is their any tricks to get them wrinkle and kink free for installation. Also, any tricks for the installation.

Thanks

No trick, just time. Get them fitted in the proper location on the door and then work your way around gluing them in place. Try not to stretch the rubber. Once they are in place and the door reinstalled, the rubber will find its own place as it conforms to the jamb.

Thanks Charlie,

One of the hangups at this time is instructions say to glue both surfaces. Let it tack up and then re-glue one surface, then install gasket. Do not understand how that would be possible with the size of the gasket and the flexibility of the gasket.

Understand you're working with contact cement, and it has specific instructions for it to adhere correctly. Read the label and follow accordingly. It's not fun, but it's how it needs to work. Having a helper hold one end of the snake while you stick it on the door will be extremely helpful.

Thank you 52 Merc. Was unaware this was contact type cement. How would one apply it to the seal and keep it off the surface of the seal? I'm thinking blue painters tape maybe

Worked with a lot of rubber cement, which is what the seal cement basically is. As Wayne stated, both the seal and the surface to which you are attaching it to, has to have the cement slathered on. After the cement has "tacked", or started to dry, you then carefully start attaching the seal. You must be very careful that you get the seal aligned correctly the first time, as this stuff doesn't want to let go.

My advice is to use a small acid brush to apply the cement to both the door, and the seal. I feel that it is easier to control the amount, and where it goes easier. An extra set of hands is also a very good idea.

Thank you Gertie. I can see how I can apply a nice even layer on to the door with out making to much mess. My thought is to tape it off with blue tape to glue the door. But I am not shure how to apply it to the seal itself and be able to control where it goes on the seal. Any ideas thanks
