Got my ranger done :)
So, this is my 2009 Ranger XL. 4x4, 4.0, auto. I got it back in April with a blown up transmission through a silent auction at my work for the princely sum of $801. Has 172K on it.
This is what I started with:

I found a 45K mile transmission on ebay for $700 so I threw that in, and along the way it also got a new core support, new brakes all around, new hubs, new U-joints, and other general maintenance stuff (gear oil, fuel filter etc), pulled the bed to clean up some rust underneath. I put on #1 torsion bars with pre-keys (and a little crank) and 2" shackles, and had plenty enough room to mount up 32x11.50-15 Cooper Discoverer STT's on 15x8 AR Baja wheels. Also added Bushwacker fender flares and bed rail caps.
This is the final product- doesn't look like I put as much work into it as I did but I sure did!

I drove it for about a week and then put it back in the garage...gonna keep the Mustang out for a couple more weeks anyway, plus although I told myself I wasn't going to do anything with the exhaust on this truck I couldn't stand the turbo muffler I put on there so I'm throwing on dual exhaust with a Thrush welded muffler (wanted the looks + sound).
I love the look of a lifted ranger!
I know exactly what you're saying on the work, I swapped a new engine transmission, transfer case and rear axle into my 500$ 89 Ranger with 220k on The odometer and fixed all the little things the previous owner couldn't or wouldn't fix on the rest of of the truck and have a incredibly reliable little truck.... Best 1500$ i've ever spent not including the tires and absolutely no regrets on the work it took to get it back to stock condition mechanically and then some more work after that....
