I recently got an edelbrock intake for my 390. But I realized its an older model. It's a SP2P intake. I have read old threads and heard they are really bad intake. It kinda don't want to put it anymore. Since I plan on putting a camm Should I just keep my stock 2bbl ? Is it really that bad of an intake?
I hope you didn't pay much for it. Look at the last post here. If you google it, you will find similar comments regarding the Chevy version--it's worse on a 390:
Now, how do you know you have a 390? Every measured the stroke? IF you have a 360, this may be worth the cost of gaskets to install, if it isn't cracked or warped. It was made for small, low compression, tiny cammed, tall geared smog motors. It was supposed to increase low end power by increasing intake velocity at low revs. On a 390 it's probably done by 4000 rpms.
390 or 360, truck motors are low compression jobs with sunken pistons. A hot cam is not a good idea. A shorter duration, higher lift cam is the "trick" to performance with such a motor, but some comments about that manifold indicate it will contribute to detonation with a cam like that.
Measure your stroke first unless you've seen it already.
I picked up one of these intakes up back in the late 80's for like $35 bucks an installed it with a holley #1850 600 cfm and found it to be a great improvement over the stock iron 4 barrel intake with 4100 autolite carb.
And in the Mid 90's installed a RV low end blue racer cobra cam that really woke the engine up a long with harden exh. seats.
I never did run the engine up over 4k rpm so this intake & new cam were a great combination for my heavy f250 4wd with c/o camper that could pull hills in 4th gear where as before could not do.
I've since sold the camper an replaced the old motor with 140k on it with a newer built an new 390 RPM intake and a comp cam 2009 and to this day still don't have a need to go over 4k rpm for all my driving as my truck has enough ***** for me to up shift.

I did not know that. So I am getting a performer 390. Could you give me examples on some good camshafts . I was planning a roller camm. I plan to use the the truck for off road & street use. Don't want an RV camm though.
Thank Orich. Hey kind of want to get different opinions on camshafts. I would like a mild camm that would have a lil thump to it. Plan to use my 1972f250 highboy 390fe for offroad and daily driving. Some one suggested edelbrock camm PN 2106 . Any suggestions for different camms (comp camms, crower, isky etc.)?
Ah Cams sorry I not up on those thumper cams any more. But you always give something up with a cam if you want to make a lot of noise while at idle.
A cam needs headers 2.5 pipes, some good head port work, pump the compression up,
Good hot ign system, A little bigger carb or rejet your carb will even help.
Then you got a buy good gas for it.
Me I don't like all the engine & vehicle rock n rolling any more and low manifold vacuum with a big cams. I'm running a 268 comp cam, it's like a step up over stock and pulls pretty good after 1500 rpm..
Do your home work on cams and what you'll want from it..
And how much cash you have to **** away on your build.
I dont want a ridiculous thumping noise just a mild one. I already have msd ignition, headers and exhaust. I already have 600cfm edelbrock carb. Just need an intake. And thats what I need help with, finding a camm for street use and offroad.Thats why im looking for suggestions. Does that 268 sound pretty good? Would it work great for what im looking for?

It Ok for me, but not very noticeable for what your looking for. Go to comp cams web sit they have a chart you can look through as what may work good for you. You should buy a kit lifters/spring also buy a new timing gear set.
